About
Co-Op
As of the 2023-2024 school year, Portfolio School is transitioning to a Teacher-Led, Parent-Owned cooperative model. At Portfolio School, we believe that the relationship between parents and teachers is integral to student success. As a cooperative school, we invest in building supportive relationships and a strong sense of community amongst parents, teachers, and children that extends beyond school hours.
In our cooperative model, parents commit to contributing time and/or other resources to support the daily and long-term functioning of the school. Each family brings their own unique gifts and skills to the circle and participates in varied areas of the school’s functioning: from marketing outreach to the maintenance of the facilities to active discussions about the school’s vision and direction.
The cooperative governing board consists of a rotating roster of current parents, leading educational experts, the Head of Program/School, and the founders of Portfolio School. This governance structure lends itself to an ethos which encourages direct and transparent communication between each of the vested parties, all of whom have a voice in the decision-making process.
